In order to help our readers cope with, among other things, the repercussions of rising food prices, our new collaborator Myriam Gendron, creator of the site Simply eatoffers a low-cost menu every week based on the best grocery discounts of the week.
Week of November 21 to 27
The countdown to Christmas has begun, it’s already a month away!
It’s the perfect time to get your hands dirty (literally), start cooking a few items in advance and fill the freezer quietly. Not only will holiday spending be better distributed over the weeks, but so will the workload.
Here are some ideas for what to prepare now:
- Cookies (even just the dough, it can be frozen in balls)
- Meatballs (minced meat is actually not expensive)
- Fruit cake
- Meat pies
- Pies
Moreover, these three discounts on basic ingredients are particularly interesting to get you started:
- House brand butter (454 g) for $4.87 at Walmart
- Brick of vegetable margarine (454 g) for $2.98 at Metro (best price)
- Flour (2.5 kg) at $3.97 at IGA
A brick of vegetable margarine can replace butter, particularly in baking. It’s more economical and its softer texture (a bit like butter at room temperature) allows you to include it directly in your recipes without tempering it. We haven’t seen butter below $4.85 this year and it’s the lowest price for a carton of vegetable margarine. In both cases… there’s no mistake (and it freezes very well)!
Happy eating!
