It’s a page that is turning for Abarth. THE November 19, 2024through the voice of Gaetano Thorel, European director of the Fiat subsidiary (Stellantis group), the brand announced its shift towards 100% electric. The car manufacturer, which specializes in sports cars, will no longer manufacture vehicles with thermal or hybrid engines.
Abarth makes its 100% electric shift
The shift taken by Abarth is based on a clear ambition: to offer electric sports cars capable of attracting both speed enthusiasts and environmental defenders. The brand has already unveiled two flagship models, the 500e and the recent 600ewhich symbolize a new era of mobility. With these vehicles, Abarth intends to prove that an electric motor can combine sportiness, driving pleasureand economy, all while being respectful of the environment.
The European director of the scoprion brand, Gaetano Thorel explains: « The costs of thermal engines have become unsustainable, both for the manufacturer and for the customer. Why pay so much when an electric car offers equivalent performance? ».
A total rejection of thermal engines
A large majority of European car manufacturers are struggling with the decarbonization targets for their production imposed by the European Union (with the first fines expected from 2025). Most, in fact, are banking on a gradual transition via hybrid. Nay for Abarth, which has decided to exclude any thermal engine, whether gasoline, diesel or hybrid. Gaetano Thorel justifies this choice by stating that: “The current hybrid engine does not achieve the power necessary for a real Abarth.» In other words, the brand favors a clear break with thermal in order to avoid tainting its sporting identity.
For Abarth, creating tailor-made models, like Alpine’s strategy, is not an option either. The brand prefers to remain faithful to its heritage: transforming conventional vehicles into accessible cars, while preserving the spirit of its founder, Carlo Abarth.
