Porsche’s headache with its aging thermal Macan

Porsche’s electrification plans aren’t going quite as planned. Two years ago, the German manufacturer planned to sell around 80% electric cars worldwide by 2030. At that time, the Taycan electric sedan was having a very good commercial start and the development of several others electric models (Macan, Boxster, Cayman, ) was already well launched.

Except that since then, sales of the Taycan have collapsed and the global context has changed. While automotive brands still plan to gradually increase their shares of electric vehicles sold, almost all of them are finding that demand is not as great as expected for this technology. This is why Porsche, like Mercedes, Audi and Bentley, has decided to review its plans for the years to come and to keep investments in the development of thermal models.

The problem of the thermal Macan

But there is a big problem: the thermal Macan, Porsche’s best seller in the world since its arrival on the market in 2014, was due to disappear shortly. Its thermal version is already no longer sold in Europe, the vehicle not being pmore compatible with local electronic security standards (Porsche had not planned to invest in this compliance, aware that its sales had collapsed here). It was also due to disappear from the United States by 2026 at the latest, disappearing there too in favor of the new Macan Electric.

But since the demand still seems very high for this thermal Macan and the Macan Electric on the contrary risks not meeting it, Porsche must find a solution. As Carscoops journalists report, the manufacturer’s American communicators specify that it “will remain marketed in the United States in the near future”, without giving more details regarding possible strategic changes regarding the model. Knowing that it is based on an old technical platform (that of the first generation Audi Q5 launched in 2008!), its electrification seems impossible and its modernization limited. So, will Porsche have to urgently decide to develop a new thermal Macan, for example based on the new third-generation Audi Q5? The hypothesis no longer seems so preposterous, even if it would cost the Zuffenhausen manufacturer dearly.
