On December 31, a driver who presents his car, 6 years old or more, for inspection will emerge with a certificate valid for one year. If he presents the same vehicle on January 2, his certificate will be valid for two years. Currently, only vehicles less than 6 years old and less than 100,000 km on the odometer are affected. From January 1, this will also be the case for cars up to 7 years and 365 days old and less than 110,000 km.
“This measure will encourage owners to maintain their vehicles in good condition in order to benefit from the certificate valid for 2 years, while reducing the costs and time linked to inspection visits”, indicated the Walloon Minister in charge of Road Safety, Valérie De Bue, when presenting this measure. “It therefore improves user comfort while having a positive impact on road safety,”

From now on, the owner of a 7-year-old car with 109,000 km on the clock, whose certificate expires next January or February, therefore has every interest in waiting until January to have its inspection. Provided, obviously, that it does not exceed the validity of its certificate.
Note also that in Brussels, the regulations do not change. Brussels residents, in such a scenario, therefore have every interest in going to Wallonia to benefit from a technical inspection certificate valid for two years.
