Google is going to do a big spring cleaning… in the middle of winter! From December 1st, all inactive Gmail accounts will be simply deleted. A radical decision that could concern you if you have a Google account that you no longer use regularly.

Why does Google do this?

This drastic measure can be explained by several reasons. First of all, security. Inactive accounts are preferred entry points for hackers. By deleting them, Google considerably reduces the risk of cyberattacks and thus protects its users’ data.. Then, this operation allows Google to rationalize its services and optimize the use of its servers. By getting rid of inactive accounts, the company frees up space and improves the performance of its platform.

However, it is important to know that it is not only mailboxes that are affected. Indeed, tAll services linked to a Google account will also be deleted: Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, Photos, etc. In other words, if you haven’t used your account for a long time, you may lose all your data. However, it is important to note that not all Google accounts are affected by this cleaning. Business and education accounts, even if inactive, will not be deleted.

Fortunately, there is still time to save your Gmail account and all the data associated with it. Google has implemented several quick and easy methods to prove your activity. All you need to do is perform at least one of the following actions before December 1st :

  • Send an email: the simplest action is to send an email to one of your contacts.
  • Perform a search: use the Google search engine while logged into your account.
  • Watch a YouTube video: Log in to your YouTube account and watch a video.
  • Use Google Drive: save or delete a file on Google Drive.
  • Install an application: download an app from the Google Play Store.

Once December begins, it will be impossible to recover your account and data. If you forgot to do any of the actions mentioned above, unfortunately you will need to create a new account.
