Bluesky has 15 million users. This is the total number of new users that Threads added in a month, says its boss.

Bluesky may be growing, but at Meta, we don’t want people to forget Instagram and Threads. Their manager, Adam Mosseri, would like to point out that Threads is even more imposing. In a post Thursday, Mosseri said Threads saw “over 15 million signups in November alone,” appearing to downplay Bluesky’s announcement that it hit 15 million total users on Wednesday.

Meta also reiterated that the platform sees more than 1 million signups per day – a statistic its CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed during last month’s earnings presentation. He also noted that the platform has been observing this volume of registrations for “three months”.

Many users have turned to Bluesky in search of a new platform to abandon X. On Elon Musk’s increasingly politicized network, users have expressed concerns about incentivizing engagement, issues moderation, disinformation and the algorithmic news feed. Some of the criticism also went towards Threads.

Adam Mosseri acknowledged that “we still have a lot of work to do” and said the company’s teams are “working hard to provide this community with what they need.” Meta plans to introduce ads on Threads soon, which may not be well received.

Meta also reported that Threads no longer asks new users if they want to follow everyone they already follow on Instagram. “We’ve been running a test for a while now and it seems like people prefer to build a different network on Threads than they have on Instagram,” its rep said. AdamAnd Mosseri appears to be open to exploring a Threads-specific private messaging system.

Right now, private messaging is one of Bluesky’s biggest advantages over Threads.
