“It’s every day”: residents of Longueuil exasperated by nauseating odors

Residents of a neighborhood in Longueuil located near a wastewater treatment center have been complaining of foul odors since the beginning of fall.

This is what citizens of Charron Island told TVA Nouvelles on Friday.

“The smell of shit is every day, almost every day,” said a resident of the residential area.

“You can’t sit on your terrace in the summer when there are foul odors,” added another citizen.

The South Shore Purification Center treats wastewater from several cities, namely Longueuil, Boucherville, Brossard and Saint-Lambert. Every day, there are nearly 300,000 m3 of wastewater that is treated, including around 40 tonnes of residual material, mainly organic.

The City of Longueuil indicated for its part that temporary additional equipment was installed outside, which would explain the odors. The municipality stressed that the situation should be resolved in the spring of 2025 and wanted to ensure that the odors pose no risk to the health of citizens.
