OpenAI is collaborating with Broadcom and TSMC to develop its first artificial intelligence chips. The company wants to meet the growing needs for AI computing power, as reported by Reuters. OpenAI has reportedly agreed with TSMC to produce the first chips by 2026. But the schedule could still change. The company is further diversifying its chip supply with chips from AMD and Nvidia.
OpenAI has already been collaborating with Broadcom for months for these chips. The company would have set up a team of 20 people, under the direction of Thomas Norrie and Richard Ho who had worked on the development of TPUs (Tensor Processing Units) at Google.
According to the report, OpenAI considered various options to diversify its chip supply and reduce operating costs. The company expects a loss of $5 billion for the current fiscal year – heavily dependent on spending on computing power. OpenAI would also have given up on setting up a network of factories.
