Geneva is investing 10 million francs in renewable hydrogen. The Council of State published yesterday the terms of allocation of this envelope. It will finance projects linked to hydrogen, its production, its storage and its distribution and its use, but more particularly applications linked to mobility.
It is the first truck with electric and hydrogen propulsion designed in Switzerland, it was put into service in January 2023 in Geneva. This 40-ton vehicle has 570 horsepower for a range of 450 kilometers. Its particularity: it only emits water vapor into the atmosphere.
Almost everywhere in Europe, renewable hydrogen embodies the energy of the future. In French-speaking Switzerland, it is notably made from this dam in Fribourg. It is the use of electricity that makes it possible to transform water into hydrogen gas.
An investment in concrete material goods not in fundamental research
In Geneva, deputies voted in 2022, a law opens an investment credit of 10 million francs intended to develop a cantonal hydrogen plan. Yesterday, the Council of State set the framework for the allocation of this envelope. A commission supervised by the Cantonal Environment Office will be responsible for analyzing the demands arising from the hydrogen ecosystem. “The credit desired by the Grand Council is intended for investment in concrete material goods, not in fundamental research,” explains Philippe Royer, director of the Cantonal Environment Office.
One of the ways to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050
This green energy vector is intended to replace fossil fuels used in the most energy-intensive sectors of the economy, indicates Philippe Royer: “the use of hydrogen is a way of decarbonizing certain sections of our industry, particularly those which require a lot of energy such as heavy industry or heavy transport, road, maritime or rail over long distances.
According to the authorities, renewable hydrogen will be one of the means which will contribute to achieving the carbon neutrality targeted by 2050.
