The barometer established by the General Directorate of Enterprises (DGE) shows net creations (or extensions) of 8 factories over the first six months of the year. The balance reached 189 creations or extensions over the whole of 2023.
France is still creating factories. Announcements of factory closures from Michelin or the desire to sell others to the automotive supplier Valeone should not overshadow the real figures. And, for the moment, they still show that France is creating more factories than it is closing. The barometer of factories in France, established by the General Directorate of Enterprises (DGE), shows that the balance between factory creations and closures still remains positive, according to the daily Les Echos.
In the first half of 2024, it still shows “a moderate increase in openings and extensions of industrial sites, with 36 net openings”specifies the DGE. If we do not take into account extensions, but only the openings of new sites, the results are, however, slightly negative, at -8 sites. Above all, the balance sheet marks a very clear deceleration compared to the balance sheet for the years 2022 and 2023, marked by net creations/extensions of +176 and +189. This slowdown does not, however, prevent the DGE from estimating that this “do not question the reindustrialization of France » and that “the results remain on trend to achieve the reindustrialization objectives”.
The most dynamic sectors remain, unsurprisingly, those linked to green industry, with a positive balance of +21. 60% of industrial installations concern the renewable energy sector (batteries, photovoltaics, heat pumps, wind power, hydrogen). Carbon-free transport (notably electric vehicles) also remains dynamic. On the other hand, the automotive (6 closures in net) or energy-intensive (plastics at -3) sectors are suffering greatly. Which shows that the cost of energy or the difficulties of the automobile weigh heavily.
