  • After resisting, the American insurance company UnitedHealth ended up paying a ransom to hackers who had greatly paralyzed its activities.

  • But, a less common phenomenon, a second blackmail intervened.

  • The cost for the insurer is enormous, between ransom, repairs and fine.

  • In Switzerland, if large institutions seem well protected, smaller players are less so.

While is suffering the full brunt of the massive hacking of its telecoms operator Free, the United States is suffering an even more painful shock. These days, the country is discovering that a colossal mass of ultra-sensitive data – medical information – is in the possession of numerous computer hackers. Never has a theft of such personal information taken place on such a scale, affecting 100 million Americans.

At the heart of this hack is Change Healthcare, a branch of the American insurance company UnitedHealth. In February of this year, the company suffered a massive hack, resulting in a large data theft of an estimated 4 to 8 terabytes. At the beginning, the attack takes place according to a classic scenario. Hackers manage to enter the company’s computer system, and encrypt the data using a ransomware. Computers are unusable, information is stolen and a ransom is demanded from hackers for a return to normal.
