Quebec’s German Christmas market: new features that promise to amaze

The German Christmas Market will soon be set up in Old Quebec and several new features will be offered to visitors, including a sound and light show on a giant tree.

The Quebec German Christmas Market (MNAQ), which takes place from November 21 to December 23, once again promises to bring the magic of the Holidays to life under the theme “Emotions and Traditions”. It will welcome a record number of exhibitors, with 125 merchants from Quebec, Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

Among the 200 free activities offered for the duration of the market, there are several new features in the program, which promise to amaze young and old.

There are in particular the Wundertannen, which means “wonderful fir trees”, which will be installed at the corner of De Buade and Sainte-Famille streets, very close to the Notre-Dame de Québec basilica.

“It’s a giant 26-foot bouquet of fir trees,” enthuses Olivia Lexhaller, general director of MNAQ.

“The bouquet of trees will be animated with sound and light shows which will take place from dark, once an hour and always to an extract from a classic musical piece,” continues Mme Lexhaller.

The MNAQ organization entrusted the task of choosing the musical excerpts to none other than Clemens Schuldt, the musical director of the Orchester symphonique de Québec.

An illuminated circuit

A new 1.2 km winter illumination circuit will be accessible until mid-March in Old Quebec. It will consist of trees and light curtains, lanterns, arches and staircases decorated with sparkling gems.

Throughout this route, some commercial windows will come alive with a collection of Christmas automatons, coming directly from Europe. It will start on rue Saint-Jean, and end on rue du Sault-au-Matelot.

“This circuit is a very big change for us. The objective is to get out of our sites and enliven Old Quebec for a longer period,” specifies the director.

The MNAQ will therefore be an opportunity for visitors to also enjoy Petit-Champlain and the Port of Quebec.

Furthermore, the exhibitors’ cabins installed on Rue Sainte-Famille will be decorated with clocks inspired by the traditional “cuckoo” clocks in Germany. They will be animated by lights. The Alpine chalet will also be expanded this year.
