The Jura Commerce Association welcomes a measure which goes in the right direction in the face of shopping tourism but which it considers insufficient. The Confederation recently decided to increase the excess value from 300 francs to 150 francs per person per day from next year. Beyond the new threshold, you will have to pay Swiss VAT. The measure aims to improve tax justice and reduce shopping tourism. The Jura Commerce Association is directly concerned since many Jura residents go to to make purchases. The president of the Jura Commerce Association, Thomas Schaffter, believes that “the measure will remind us of the importance of consuming locally”. “Any measure going in this direction will be favorably received but I do not idealize it,” specifies the Bruntrutain who does not expect mountains and wonders from it. Thomas Schaffter also says he understands the Jura residents who go shopping in France because of their economic difficulties and does not intend to demonize the people in question. However, he points out that “certain products are not necessarily much more expensive in Switzerland”. Thomas Schaffter also hopes that “the authorities will seriously attack the island of high prices that is Switzerland” and denounces “the distributors, the intermediaries, who are significantly raising prices in our country”.

The increase from 300 francs to 150 francs per person per day of the value-free allowance to limit shopping tourism will therefore come into force on January 1, 2025. /fco
