Fruit juice brand Capri Sun calls for the return of plastic straws. The company has launched a petition and is hoping for 1 million signatures so it can take the matter to the European Commission. For many, this request seems like a step backwards.
Many of you have probably experienced this situation: the difficulty of piercing a Capri Sun juice pouch with a paper straw. “The problem is that this straw gets stuck. When you try to drill the little hole, it’s complicated, and once inside, it tears“, explains a Capri Sun consumer. To solve this problem, the fruit juice brand is considering returning to plastic straws.
This gives a very bad image of the sector
Capri Sun therefore launched a petition in the hope of collecting one million signatures. The aim is to bring the matter before the European Commission. This represents a real step backwards, as the industry seeks to reduce its ecological footprint. “I think this gives a very bad image of the food sector, especially since the whole industry is making great efforts in terms of sustainability“, explains Pierre-Alexandre Billiet, director of Gondola.
What solution?
Today, around 150 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans, 50% of which are single-use plastics. But for Renaud de Bruyn, expert at Ecoconso, the problem lies as much in single use as in the plastic itself. “Rather than using disposable objects made from a single material, we should favor reusable objects.“
One solution could be to eliminate straw altogether. The brand has already done this for its 33 cl format.
