In addition to the main symposium program, in the hall, numerous exhibition stands presented quality ginseng and medicinal plant products. This provided opportunities for Vietnamese and international companies to interact and exchange experiences, promote their products and seek business cooperations.

Strong potential

According to experts present at the conference, Vietnam has strong potential for the development of the ginseng, flavoring and medicinal plant industries.

The country’s traditional national medicine and medicinal plants record the use of 5,117 strains of medicinal plants belonging to 1,823 varieties of 362 families of plants with therapeutic properties allowing the treatment and prevention of different diseases.

The total production of medicinal plants cultivated in Vietnam is estimated at around 100,000 tonnes per year. Among them are listed many precious, rare and endemic species which have both great economic value and remarkable medicinal uses, such as Ngoc Linh and Lai Châu ginsengs, golden orchid, wild panax notoginseng, red pine …

Eight major growing regions

However, investment is still limited. As the products are largely self-sufficient, there is a lack of connectivity and especially information on the international market. This is why the Vietnamese government has adopted and implemented many policies and incentives for investment in promoting the ginseng and medicinal plants industry.

The Prime Minister also approved the development program of Vietnam’s pharmaceutical and medicinal products industry until 2030, with a vision to 2045. The overall goal is to take it to a new height, until level 4 of the World Health Organization classification scale, whose market value is in the Top 3 in ASEAN, ensuring adequate and timely supply of quality, safe and effective medicines at a reasonable price .

According to the plan, the eight major regions in Vietnam’s medicinal plant production are: Northwest, Northeast, Red River Delta, North Central, Southern Coast, Central Highlands, Southeast and South -West.

Brand development

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the development of ginseng and its derived products does not measure up to Vietnam’s potential and assets due to the lack of quality legal seed sources, links and mutual support, preliminary processing facilities, deep processing and promotion of consumer markets.

Faced with this situation, the 1er June 2023, the Prime Minister published Decision No. 611 approving the development program for Vietnamese ginseng until 2030, with a vision for 2045, with the aim of developing a national brand with a brand image international.

Thus, localities with potential and assets in this area such as Kon Tum, Gia Lai (Central Highlands) and Quang Nam (Central) must focus on investments to develop ginseng, as well as on concentration areas. of ginseng raw materials by striving to reach approximately 21,000 ha of cultivation by 2030. Particular care must be given to the means of conservation, development, transformation and trade of the basic products that are Ngoc ginsengs Linh and Lai Chau. The organization of commercial promotion and product presentation activities will also be strengthened in the near future.

“Ho Chi Minh City looks forward to opinions, suggestions and feedback on the application of science and technology to the process of cultivation, production, processing and preservation of ginseng, flavors and medicinal plants , as well as the potential for international cooperation in this area. Your sharing will contribute to the realization of Vietnam’s policy of sustainable development and international cooperation in the ginseng, flavors and medicinal plants industries.concluded Vo Van Hoan, vice-president of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City.
