Battery-Box HVL, a 96 kWh residential battery dedicated to energy self-consumption

Build Your Dreams is a Chinese company known for its new energy vehicles (NEV). According to figures published on its website, the BYD brand has managed to sell more than 3 million electric and plug-in hybrid cars worldwide in 2023. Which positions it as one of Tesla’s main competitors. In addition to NEVs, it makes solar energy storage systems available to consumers and aims to become a major player in this market. Among the latest products designed by the multinational high-tech company is the HVL Battery-Box. The latter has many advantages, particularly in terms of prices, as well as some weaknesses.

Modules to be added according to storage needs

Like other residential batteries from BYD, such as the LVS, HVM or HVS, the HVL Battery-Box is modular. Depending on the storage needs of a home, it is possible to combine several modules and reach a capacity of 12 to 96 kWh. In terms of dimensions, the height of the device can range from 99.6 cm to 216 cm, depending on the number of elements added. Its width and depth are 58.4 cm and 29.7 cm respectively. Concerning the weight, it can range from 150 to 375 kg per stack of modules. For information, the Chinese brand has opted for lithium-iron-phosphate technology in the design of its residential energy storage system, in order to guarantee a high level of security and an excellent lifespan.

A relatively affordable price

In the design of this residential battery, the BYD company did not primarily focus on technology and storage capacity. In order to stand out from the competition and attract more consumers, the Chinese brand has also set the cost of its solar energy storage device at a relatively low level. For a 16 kWh installation, it costs around €10,100, a more affordable price than that of traditional lithium batteries. Indeed, according to estimates published on the Ensol website, the prices of the latter vary from 800 to 1,000 €/kWh, or between 12,800 and 16,000 € for a 16 kWh storage system. Please note that for a complete solar installation including HVL Battery Boxes of the same capacity, you should approximately budget a little more than €27,500.

Some disadvantages to be aware of

Although BYD’s HVL Battery-Boxes benefit from excellent storage capacity, as well as technology improving their safety and lifespan, they have some drawbacks. First of all, you should know that the Chinese company’s residential batteries are only compatible with inverters from SMA, Solis and GoodWe. In other words, they are not suitable for a home already equipped with an inverter from another brand.

Furthermore, the devices offered by the company have a warranty of only 10 years, with a capacity retention of 70%. Nevertheless, despite its few weaknesses, the HVL Battery-Box presents itself as a solution that is both economical and effective, for those who plan to install new solar installations in their home.
