The TV series “Shogun,” hailed as one of the most ambitious productions of the year with 25 nominations at the 2024 Emmy Awards, has captured the public’s attention with its breathtaking portrait of Japanese history. This series, which stands out as the most nominated of this edition, is directly inspired by the life of William Adams, an English navigator who became an emblematic figure of feudal Japan. His story is that of an adventurer whose determination and ingenuity left an indelible mark on relations between East and West. We tell you.

William Adams was born in 1564 in Gillingham, Kent, a coastal region of England. At the age of 12, he began an apprenticeship in a shipyard in Limehouse, a district east of London. During his apprenticeship, he learned about shipbuilding, astronomy, and navigation: skills that would prove crucial to his future career. After 12 years of apprenticeship, Adams joined the Royal Navy, where he served under the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake.

In 1598, at the age of 34, William Adams embarked on an expedition to the Far East with a Dutch fleet of five ships. This voyage was marked by severe difficulties: after crossing the Strait of Magellan and reaching the Pacific, a violent storm scattered the ships.
