Morlanwelz: Labor shortage in the roofing sector

Even the region’s largest roofing company is short of workers
LB roofing is a family business which takes care of the construction, renovation and maintenance of roofs. This Sunday, they opened their doors to visitors and offered them a tour of the premises as well as interactive stands with the aim of introducing people to the profession.

The day is centered around family in order to attract the most candidates. For what? Because our profession is truly a profession in shortage.
Mickael Orbez, LB Toiture sales director.

It was important to us to hold this day because we would like to hire young people and also try to highlight the profession. Laurent Bassette, manager LB Toiture.

Slate maker is the most beautiful job in the world! It’s true that it’s not easy every day, but we are in the open air. We do something, it’s never the same thing, it’s always different. Mike Blaszkiewicz slate manager, LB Roofing.

It’s a difficult job, but many other functions revolve around it. We can drive drones, we are bringing new technology into our profession. We also have this whole aspect of driving trucks, handling cranes… There is also a whole exciting technical aspect behind the roof, which people are not necessarily aware of.

A lack that is felt, and which has repercussions
Whether at LB roofing or among other craftsmen, the profession of roofer still remains too little known among young people. A problem which has repercussions on the turnover of roofing companies because demand only increases while supply stagnates.

For the moment it is not easy because people no longer want to work for the sake of working, and above all, there is a shortage of qualified people.

Today, in our opinion, there are very few things that are put in place, whether at the level of Forem, IFAPME or CEFA.

It’s been a while now that we’ve been having more and more difficulty finding staff and we have to react. This is why we want to create our own training center. For next year we would like to offer training within our company.

Training them ourselves would allow us to take them younger and train them as we wish and show them the real aspect of the profession.

Great ambitions with the aim of training future roofers who are passionate about their profession. Furthermore, contrary to popular beliefs, the job of roofer is accessible to everyone, men or women, it does not necessarily require strength, but more motivation, accompanied by technique and this can be learned.
