Keeping apothecary accounts with your meal voucher balance will become a thing of the past. At least in the future since we are only at the beginning of a new solution offered by Payconiq, allowing you to pay more simply with your meal vouchers and your bank account.

The functionality is, on paper, couldn’t be simpler. Concretely, if your meal voucher balance is insufficient, the banking application will automatically debit the remaining amount from the bank account. Automatic balancing that simplifies checkout, avoiding checking your balance beforehand and asking to divide the bill to correspond to the remaining balance. Another advantage: products that cannot be paid for with meal vouchers are also paid via the same QR scan, but with the bank account linked to the app.

“This new functionality of the Payconiq by Bancontact application is unique on the market,” explains Nathalie Vandepeute, CEO of Bancontact Payconiq Company, in a press release. “It is the first payment solution in Belgium that allows you to combine meal vouchers with another payment method (here Payconiq) in a single transaction. In this way, we are significantly simplifying the payment experience, both for consumers and merchants.”

Not yet in supermarket

If the option will be “soon available” at CBC Mobile, KBC Mobile and KBC Brussels Mobile, only Payconiq currently offers it to more than 3,000 merchants in Belgium, such as bakeries or cafes, which accept meal vouchers and who offer Payconiq, via a QR code on a sticker or on their smartphone. To use this technology in large areas, you will still have to wait but the company indicates that “it will be eventually”.

The functionality to pay with meal vouchers is selected by default in the app. The user can always uncheck this option if they prefer to pay the entire amount using their bank account.

Users of the Payconiq by Bancontact app have been able to pay mobilely with their meal vouchers for two years now. Since then, the use of this functionality has experienced real growth. Edenred, Monizze and Pluxee cards can be added as a payment method in the Payconiq by Bancontact app.
