Lithium-free sodium batteries enter commercial production in the United States (and it changes everything)

The pioneer of sodium-ion batteries now offers its solution to everyone. Natron Energy officially began large-scale manufacturing of its products on Monday, April 29. This is the first time this type of battery has been offered in such large quantities in the United States.

Natron has been working on this technology since 2022. Although the launch of commercial production was to begin last year, the advantages of these models remain the same. Sodium-ion batteries offer fast charging and long life.

A 100% American battery to avoid supply tensions

Above all, Natron models are presented as an alternative to batteries using lithium. An argument in favor of the planet. Because sodium is between 500 and 1,000 times more abundant than lithium on the planet, indicates New Atlas. Beyond availability, the company also points to facilities for recovering sodium, since it is not necessary to carry out extraction to obtain it.

United States: Lake Michigan at thaw time

Natron Energy also hopes to attract national supply. All of the elements required to manufacture the sodium-ion battery are present in the United States. The company also made sure to remove nickel or cobalt from its solution to avoid any risk linked to geopolitical decisions, preferring instead aluminum, iron or manganese.

“Our new facility in Holland (Michigan, USA) will significantly accelerate Natron’s growth trajectory, positioning the company to lead the next battery revolution. As the world advances toward a future powered by energy clean and renewable, continued innovation in the energy storage sector remains an absolute necessity”assured Wendell Brooks, co-president of Natron Energy.

A first outlet in artificial intelligence

The company invested $40 million to upgrade its factory and convert its lithium-ion battery production lines to manufacture sodium-ion batteries. By the end of next year, Natron Energy plans to employ around a hundred people on its site, which should reach a production capacity of 600 MW of sodium-ion batteries each year.

Natron Energy bases this growth on a rapidly developing sector: artificial intelligence. It is also to data centers that the first productions will be shipped in June. The company wishes to meet the constant power needs of these data centers24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It is also planned that the Holland factory will serve as a basis for the creation of a gigafactory, with increased production capacities. No date has been announced by Natron Energy to implement this next project.
