Warren Buffett considers AI a modern-day atomic bomb. AI “has enormous potential for good and enormous potential for evil,” the Berkshire Hathaway CEO said.
Warren Edward Buffett is an American businessman, investor and philanthropist, co-founder and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. Thanks to his investment successes, Buffett is one of the best-known investors in the world. As of April 2024, his fortune stood at $139 billion, making him the ninth richest person in the world.
During a question-and-answer session at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder conference, Buffett compared the advent of artificial intelligence to his views on nuclear weapons. The Berkshire CEO referred to remarks he made at the conference last year, recalling that he had described the atomic bomb as a genie out of the deep that “did terrible things“and who makes him”very scared“.
“AI is a bit similar, it’s partly out of the bottle, it’s extremely important and someone is going to take care of it” said Mr. Buffet. “We may wish we had never seen this genius, but we may also do wonderful things.“
Although he is not very familiar with technology, he had an experience that made him “a little nervous“about AI: he came across a video using his AI-generated image,”delivering a message that in no way emanated” from him. He fears that this opens the way to potential scams, which he describes as “booming industry of all time“.
Warren Buffett admits he’s not an expert in artificial intelligence, but what he does know makes him nervous. “I think, as someone who understands absolutely nothing about this subject, that there is a potential standard of good and a potential standard of evil“, he said. “And I don’t know how it’s going to happen.“
