From January 2025, all users of the metro, train and RER network in the Paris region will benefit from a single fare, at 2.50 euros per ticket, regardless of their destination. The stated objective of this change, announced in THE Parisian Tuesday, September 17 and confirmed by the regional transport authority Ile-de- Mobilités (IDFM), is to simplify the lives of the 4 million occasional users who buy single tickets.

By eliminating the current price jungle, the ticket will be more expensive within Paris – where it is currently sold for 2.15 euros per unit or 1.73 euros per book of ten. A book which itself will disappear. But will be less expensive for other journeys – where “OD” (origin-destination) tickets currently cost between 3.20 euros and 5 euros per unit depending on the distance travelled.

The current system combines many different formulas, depending on the area and the mode of transport. “The goal is to take the logic of the single Navigo pass to its conclusion. This time for occasional travelers with the same principle: the same transport price for all Parisians, whether they live in the outer suburbs or in Paris.”said Valérie Pécresse, president of IDFM, in an interview with Parisian.

A “self-financed” reform

“This reform is self-financed. It has a theoretical cost of 30 million euros in revenue per year if behavior does not change. But we believe that these new rates will result in an increase in the use of transport of around 1% to 2% and we will intensify the fight against fraud.”she said. The president (Les Républicains, LR) of the region defended a price of 2.50 euros, “a socially and economically acceptable price, while the theoretical equilibrium price would be 2.80 euros. For the bus-tram ticket, it will be 2 euros”.

The Liberté+ formula, a postpaid card currently operating in Paris, will be extended to the whole of the Ile-de-France region, with the advantage of offering a connection between bus and tram or metro.

Greeting like “good news” the implementation of this single tariff, the left-wing opposition to the regional president judges in a press release that the announced self-financing “remains to be demonstrated even if we can guess that the increase in the price of the ticket to use the metro (which will go from 2.15 euros to 2.50 euros, i.e. + 16%) will generate significant revenue and some disappointments”. “This announcement comes without debate, prior information or a vote by the board of directors of Ile-de-France Mobilités”deplores Céline Malaisé, president of the Communist Left, ecologist and citizen, who notes that this reform will apply on the 1er January 2025, “either the day a new increase in tariffs comes into force”.
