The American giant has announced to its employees that they will now have to work in person 5 days a week.

Is the golden age of teleworking over? For Andy Jassy, the boss of the American conglomerate Amazon, yes. The CEO warned his administrative department employees on Monday, September 16, that they would have to return to the office full time as before the pandemic from January, and stop teleworking. Like many giants in the technology sector, the American group had agreed to have its employees work remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic and was having difficulty getting them to return to the office full time.

Amazon had already required a presence three days a week in February 2023. From January 2, they will have to be there five days a week, said Andy Jassy, the group’s CEO, on Monday. “Looking back over the last five years, we continue to believe that the benefits of being together in the office are significant.”he explained in an internal message.

More than 300,000 employees affected

“We find that it is easier for our employees to learn, design, train and strengthen our culture; collaborating, sharing and inventing are simpler and more effective; teaching and learning from each other is easier; and teams tend to be better connected to each other.”he continued.

“For locations that had flexible offices before the pandemic, including across much of Europe, we will continue to operate in this way”the Amazon boss said. The group had 300,000 to 350,000 employees in its administrative services worldwide in 2023, after having made numerous layoffs. This workforce does not include staff in its warehouses or delivery services, which make up the largest contingent of Amazon’s total number of employees (around 1.5 million).
