Is it normal to sleep with your eyes open? Sleeping with your eyes open is not the norm, but it is a phenomenon that can occur in some people. This behavior affects about 20% of the population to varying degrees. Most of the time, the eyes are only partially open and a thin strip of the white of the eye can be seen. This can be a temporary or permanent phenomenon, depending on the causes associated with it. This peculiarity is often discovered by relatives, because the people concerned obviously do not realize that they are sleeping with their eyes open! Their sleep proceeds normally despite this peculiarity.

There are several reasons why a person may not be able to close their eyes completely when they sleep. One of the most common reasons is weak eyelid muscles that are not strong enough to keep the eyelids closed during sleep. This weakness may be related to neurological disorders, facial nerve paralysis, high blood pressure, or nerve damage. Other causes include birth defects of the eyelids or scarring from injury or surgery. In some cases, inflammation or infection of the eyelids, such as blepharitis, can also prevent complete closure.
