The vehicle, which was transporting dozens of seafood fillets, was to drop off its cargo in the north of France from Portugal… without keeping them in a refrigerated space.

Catalan police officers have probably prevented a major food poisoning incident. The Mossos d’Esquadra – the police force in this Spanish region – intercepted a truck full of unrefrigerated shellfish that was heading straight for France, they announced on social media on Thursday, September 5. Attached to their message was a photo of the haul: dozens of nets filled with shellfish, stacked inside the vehicle.

The discovery was made by chance on the AP-7 motorway, near Girona, about sixty kilometres from the French border. The police were responding to a broken down vehicle, which “had a flat tire and was overloaded”. Inside, the Mossos discover the unrefrigerated shipment of shells, and learn that “the certificate of transport of perishable products [présenté par le chauffeur] is no longer valid”.

The truck driver had started his journey, loaded with his poorly preserved seafood, in Portugal. He was supposed to deliver it to the north of France, according to the police, where there is little doubt that the products would not have been very fresh when they arrived. The police said they had stopped the vehicle and its cargo.
