The inhabitants of Goma live surrounded by the noise of weapons that tonne around. Thursday, January 23, fighting dangerously approached the provincial capital of North Kivu, located at the Eastern borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Never had they threatened this city so much since the resurgence, in November 2021, of the rebellion of the M23, supported by the Rwanda army. In the evening, the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in a statement ” alarm ” by resumption of fighting and alerted to “The risk of a regional war”.

The city of Sake, just 25 kilometers west of Goma, would indeed have fallen Thursday morning in the hands of the M23, according to several foreign security and humanitarian sources established in Goma. “We heard detonations of heavy weapons in the distance until the middle of the afternoon. Since then, it's the lull, but we are still wondering if Goma is not going to be attacked ”testifies TUVER, a resident of the city preferring to remain anonymous. “The assault on Sake surprised us all”he adds.
