2024, bad year for French publishers

During the SNE greetings ceremony, Vincent Montagne outlined a “first assessment of book sales in 2024“. Trends, more than figures: tweezers are always required for this exercise, so early in the year. Last year therefore saw a growth in transfers of rights abroad: the French edition is exporting, a positive point.

And to add: “A trend already observed in 2023, but which is increasing. Obviously, there are exceptions and great successes, particularly in literature. »

Sales: the general decline

By consulting the estimates of our partner Edistat, the trend in volume sales would show a decline of 4%, with 301.18 million copies sold in 2024. The month of April would have been the most painful, with 10% of decline compared to 2023 and a literary start in September also falling by 7%.

Remember that 2023 already showed a drop of 4% compared to 2022, with 312.57 million copies.

In terms of turnover, 2024 would represent €3.799 billion, generated by the various points of sale in France, a decline of 2%. The GSS reach 53% of this amount, compared to 36% for the bookstore and 12% for the GSA.
