“I hate it… It stings and it's useless.“Wasps that terrorize adults and children have a bad reputation.”It is high time to pay tribute to them, because they are not there, just, to annoy us at aperitif time and they deserve all our interest“, explains Cécile Miraglio who placed this insect, cousin of bees, bumblebees and ants, at the heart of her ninth work.
There are 8,000 species
Did you know that out of 8,000 species, only five of them bother us? That these great hunters are excellent pollinators? That these inventors of paper pulp, feeding on nectar and pollen, build gigantic bee-eaters like great architects?
Symbols of tenacity, perseverance and feminine power, social wasps live in colonies and do not hesitate to disguise themselves as warriors to ward off predators, while the potter wasp, the cuckoo wasp with metallic reflections nicknamed the hummingbird of insects, the garden scolia or even the fig wasp are among the more discreet solitaries. And then, let's face it, who hasn't dreamed of having their famous “wasp waist”?
A self-published album
At a time when the planet in danger is at the center of concern, the Villeneuvois author-illustrator is choosing to tell their story in rehabilitation mode. “If 70% of insects have disappeared in thirty years, it is also linked to our lack of knowledge of their life and their role.“. Throughout the pages, readers discover its function in regulating the population of insects and arachnids.
Just like the previous opuses, The Wasp is a self-published album, printed on recycled paper, both fun and educational, full of pretty winks and other surprises, remarkable both in its extremely documented content and the superb quality of the illustrations. Aimed at the youngest from 6 years old with accompanied reading and from 8-9 years old independently, here is a very nice (late) gift idea for the end of year celebrations.
