Three books arrive in bookstores after the extraordinary Mazan rape trial

The trial ended on December 19 with sentences ranging from three years in prison, two of which were suspended, up to twenty years in prison.

Three books are announced after the Mazan rape trial, which resulted in the conviction of 51 men for rape, including one to be published on January 22 by Éditions de l’Observatoire.

Following the worldwide impact of the affair, the book by Gisèle Pelicot’s daughter, Caroline Darian, And I stopped calling you Dadalready published in 2022 by JC Lattès, has been translated into several languages, notably English, German and Italian.

“Mazan trial, the explosion” by Cynthia Illouz

Published by Éditions de l’Observatoire, Mazan trial, the explosion by Cynthia Illouz, essayist expert on gender equality in management, is expected in bookstores on Wednesday January 22. “This affair is not only marked by the scale of the acts, or the ‘normality’ of the aggressors, but also by the flaws of the institutions which stifle speech, blame the victims and erase consent”she says in the presentation of the work sent to AFP.

In its release program, Flammarion announces for March 5 Living with men, reflections on the Pelicot trial, an essay by the philosopher Manon Garcia. This philosophy teacher from the Free University of Berlin went to the trial in Avignon, where the men who raped Gisèle Pelicot, 72, drugged by her husband, were judged. “What does it say about the blind spots in the feminist fight, about our conception of rape and sexuality? What path do we have left to go?”she asks, according to the publisher’s presentation.

“Writing Mazan” by Élise Costa

The third work is based on the hearings before the Assize Court, which lasted three and a half months, from September to December: Write Mazan by journalist Élise Costa. Announced by Marchialy editions for June 4, it “tells this historic trial and its off-camera”. “All the details of this affair have covered the news channels and newspapers. How can we tell these facts? How can we write about the complexity of debates and human relationships?” are the questions this legal columnist is trying to answer.
