Fired by Red Bull at the end of last season, Sergio Pérez still does not know what tomorrow will bring. Return to Formula 1, retirement? The Mexican driver could also activate another, more surprising option.
Fourth in the Formula 1 driver rankings between 2020 and 2021, third in 2022, second in 2023, Sergio Pérez has earned the esteem and respect of all. Alas, this 2024 season will have been anything but that of conformation for the teammate of the reigning four-time world champion, Max Verstappen.
Indeed, the nearly 35-year-old Mexican driver has not won a single Grand Prix, which cost Red Bull the constructors' championship. In the process, after reflection, the Austrian firm decided to part ways with Pérez, to entrust the then vacant seat to Liam Lawson. At the end of last year, we discussed the options available to Sergio Pérez, after a period of rest, with his family. But news could well be knocking on the door soon.
Heading to Formula E for Sergio Pérez?
Questioned by GPBlog, Antonio Pérez, the father of Sergio Pérez, dropped a little bombshell concerning the future of his son:
“Formula E is a category that has been around for 11 years and continues to grow. Today it is the second best category and in five years it will be the main one. Watch out, we might see Checo Pérez racing here. That wouldn't be a problem.“
Before him, Pascal Wehrlein, Sébastien Buemi, Stoffel Vandoorne, Lucas di Grassi, Nyck De Vries and the French driver Jean-Éric Vergne moved from Formula 1 to Formula E, with more or less success. From there to saying that Sergio Pérez will drive electric in the near future, there is a step that we will not take. In any case, the possibility seems to be very real.
