Last September, 6,000 books, collected in Menton, Monaco and Nice, were sent to Senegal to provide several schools with textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias, novels, books for toddlers, etc.
This first edition was created by the Aux cœurs des mots association, chaired by Hilde Haneuse-Heye and under the honorary presidency of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. Supported by the City of Menton via an agreement, this beautiful and noble action enabled six municipal schools, L’Odyssée Municipal Library and the Pierre and Marie-Curie high school to donate books necessary for the education of young people Senegalese.
The collection took place from May to August 2024. The books were sorted then packaged by volunteers in the multipurpose room of the Careï nursery school, made available during the summer holidays. More than 250 boxes, arranged on eight pallets, were transported to Dakar before being given to teachers and librarians from the eight Senegalese schools selected for this project.
On January 10, members of the association were received at City Hall by Sylviane Royeau, deputy delegate for Education, accompanied by elected officials and the municipal services concerned. The opportunity for the founding president to thank the City for its collaboration and to announce the 2nd edition which will take place during the summer of 2025.
« In agreement with National Education, our 2nd library action will take place in the territory of the Menton district, which represents more than forty schools. We are aiming to collect around 20,000 books because we will benefit from the change in the school curriculum », Confided Hilde Haneuse-Heye.
