the essential
Donald Trump, who will take office on January 20, has released a map of the United States that includes Greenland and the Panama Canal, which he would like to annex by force if necessary. The American president would also like Canada to become a simple American state.

Donald Trump’s press conference was supposed to be about an investment by the United Arab Emirates for a new data center in the United States. But the subject was quickly brushed aside by the American president. During this rambling press conference, he repeated his expansionist ambitions for the United States over Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal.

And Donald Trump does not rule out using force to achieve his ends. To journalists who asked him if he could guarantee that he would not use the armed forces to annex the Panama Canal and Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, Donald Trump replied: “I can’t tell you. sure, on neither”.

Take control of Greenland

Just before Christmas, Donald Trump judged that taking control of Greenland was “an absolute necessity” for “national security and freedom around the world”. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. On Tuesday, the US president urged the Danes to “give up” on Greenland. Coincidentally or not with the timing, one of Donald Trump’s sons went there for a private visit. Reaction from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen: “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders”.

Annex the Panama Canal

Donald Trump had already expressed in the past his desire to annex the Panama Canal if the price of tolls for American ships was not reduced. This canal was built by the Americans in 1914 and the agreement made by Jimmy Carter in 1977 resulted in control of the canal in Panama in 1999. It has become a vital artery of global shipping. “They are not treating us fairly. They are charging our ships more than the ships of other countries,” said Donald Trump. Firm response from Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha: Panama’s sovereignty over this canal “is not negotiable”.

Making Canada an American State

A few hours after the announcement of the resignation of Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, Monday January 6, Donald Trump declared that Canada should “merge” with the United States. The American president threatens to use “economic force” against Canada, this ally “subsidized” by the United States for its protection, according to him. The Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, replied that Canada would “never back down from threats”, while Justin Trudeau added: “Never, ever, will Canada be part of the United States”.

Change the name of the Gulf of Mexico

Donald Trump has another project: changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico. Upon his return to the White House, he declared that the United States will change the name to… America’s Gulf. And to once again attack Mexico which “must stop letting millions of people flow into our country”. Donald Trump refers to the passage of thousands of Mexican migrants at the southern border of the United States.

Donald Trump will officially take office as President of the United States on January 20 and succeed Joe Biden.
