The Caledonian bookstore successes in 2024 are… “political” Books! Readers across the country seem to have favored this theme in their book purchases.
From the May 13 crisis to a solution for the futuresuch is the title of the work of around fifty pages by business manager Joël Kasarhérou. It is one of the best sellers of 2024 for the Calédolivres bookstore. Cathy Manet is the manager of the bookstore. “Joël Kasarhérou's book analyzes the causes of the crisis. Why did it happen? It also gives perspectives and innovative solutions to get out of this economic and social slump.”
Among the best sellers, there is also the book The tragedy by Patrick Roger. “It sold well because it actually analyzes history and what’s happened recently.”
A success which is welcomed by the bookseller who noticed a resurgence in sales of New Caledonian political works a few weeks after the abuses. “I would say that there are a dozen new releases this year anyway. Despite everything, we noticed that many had come to look for answers through books. People need hope. I believe that that is is important”.
Biography, fiction novel or even children's book, New Caledonia can be told in a thousand and one ways. For all audiences. And for 2025? A question persists: will there always be as many Caledonian works on the shelves?
“Making a book is a lot of work and investment. And if there are no customers in front, we will not be profitable. Publishing is a central profession for the sector. This has repercussions on all other professions: on authors, who will not find anything to be published, on booksellers, who will not have any new publications. Many publishers work on a voluntary basis, by vocation, but at one. moment given, we can no longer and so we unfortunately stop”regrets the manager of Calédolivres.
In 2024, some publishing houses have been forced to reduce the volume of productions. Others announced the end of their story only a few weeks ago.
