Meeting around the book by Justine Augier, Legal Person

Amnesty International and the Librairie Claudine de Wavre invite you to a meeting around Justine Augier’s book, “Person morale”.

Meet on Thursday, January 30 at 7:30 p.m., at Librairie Claudine or online via Zoom.

The cement manufacturer Lafarge, the flagship of French industry, is being challenged in court for having, in war-torn Syria, maintained the activity of its Jalabiya factory at all costs until September 2014, paying millions of dollars to jihadist groups, including Daesh, in taxes, rights of passage and ransoms, exposing its Syrian employees to the terrorist threat after having sheltered expatriate staff.

Justine Augier documents the hard work of a handful of young women – lawyers, jurists, interns – who want to believe in justice, and devote their intelligence and inventiveness to making the notion of responsibility tangible. Their objective marks a turning point in the fight against the impunity of these super-powerful groups: to make this “moral person” that is the company live and be held accountable for its actions, beyond its managers, to achieve a system where obsession with profit, headlong flight and distancing make the unthinkable possible.

Meticulous and thrilling, Moral Person makes the voices of the protagonists and their languages heard, so revealing, explores the dysmetry of forces, the irreducible nature of the commitment of some, of the cynicism of others. Unfolding, with extreme attention, a spiral of facts that are difficult to believe, this book is a quest for truth that tracks down in language and in the law the flaws, the cracks from which light could emerge.

The meeting with the author will be moderated by Diane Platteuw and followed by a signing session.

“Person morale” was published by Actes Sud in September 2024.
