We can no longer count the number of investigations carried out by the European Commission into Apple's practices, but there is at least one less: that relating to digital Books, which the regulator has decided to drop.
One less thorn in the side for Apple in Europe. The European Commission has in fact decided to close the antitrust investigation into Apple's practices regarding digital books and audiobooks sold in applications distributed in the App Store. The distributor who made the complaint simply withdrew it.
Other investigations are underway
Opened in June 2020, this investigation focused on aspects related to Apple's practices in this market segment. First, the obligation to use the store's payment system (which entitles the Apple firm to a commission). And then the restrictions that prevent developers from informing users about the possibilities of purchasing cheaper content outside of the App Store.
The regulator nevertheless specifies that the closure of the procedure does not absolve Apple of any malpractice of European competition rules. It will continue to monitor the practices of all players, including Apple, with regard to the Digital Markets Regulation (DMA) and competition rules.
If Apple can breathe new life on the digital books front, the company is very far from being out of the European inn. He was sentenced to a heavy fine of 1.8 billion euros for his practices in the music streaming market (the case is under appeal). Other investigations are underway related to compliance with the DMA.
