The 2024 edition of this initiative aims to bring reading closer to children supported by associations as part of academic support.
This Wednesday, November 13, nearly 200 children from Narbonne received 20 euros each. Not in cash, no, but in the form of “book cheques”. Designated by the Maison des Potes, Mutual Aid for Integration, the Nelson Mandela Social Center and Ache, these young people all benefit from monitoring as part of academic support. This check, as its name suggests, is intended to be exchanged for a book in the city's partner bookstores, namely BD & Cie and Libellis.
Later, and accompanied by volunteers from these associations, these young people will go to one of the businesses in question and choose one or more Books of their choice, whether it is a novel, a comic strip, a dictionary or magazine. “A child who falls in love with books at a young age will have access to an infinite amount of knowledge”estimate Yves Pénet, deputy delegate for culture and heritage, and Yamina Abed, deputy delegate for citizenship and city policy, both elected referents on “book checks”.
