A misty beach, the red dragon of Wales, the Breton ermine, a parchment as an extension of the sand, a compass or as such, driftwood… appear on the poster of the multilingual children's book fair by Pluguffan. A prolific painting like a treasure from the past, washed up or rediscovered, a bit like the languages which will be in the spotlight during the 28th edition, Sunday December 1st. To create this poster, the organizers called on Matthieu Fappani, 46 years old, a complete artist living in Quimper, son of André and Michelle Fappani, well known for their local commitments.
The potential of digital
From Pluguffan where he grew up, Matthieu Fappani has good memories: “The ping-pong lessons at the Amicale laïque, the library at Pouldu…”. And drawing that he says he has always practiced. And then the development of photographic film, with his dad, in the laboratory installed in the family home. At the end of the 1990s, there was the discovery of digital tools and the first investments in equipment. “The field of possibilities became very wide. With a digital camera, in an hour, an hour and a half, it was suddenly possible to capture 300 shots, an exponential number for anyone who had experience with film. There was then a postponement of my drawing practice in favor of digital creations,” confides the artist. But he loves the material too much to detach himself from it completely. His works, numerous and unique, are the subject of artisanal work based on a vast iconography.
“Between ten minutes and five years…”
The development time is never the same, “between ten minutes and five years…” for a result that is always complex due to the effect of deconstruction but also layers, cuts, saturation. Matthieu Fappani likes the slowing down effect that his works create, far from figurative productions which leave little room for doubt. His technique is therefore also his signature, very particular, defined through visual photography. Signature which is found in the book fair poster, even if it was necessary to respect the communication issue and de facto reveal the Breton and Welsh symbols, chosen by the organizing team. But if you look closely, the intricacy that is dear to him is very present, a ray of light, a low wall, a figure from yesteryear. An inexhaustible skein that allows for many interpretations.
