The national initiative of Secours populaire “Donate to read” is relayed for the 4e both at the local level by the PIC association (Nursery of citizen initiatives) in partnership with the Sillage bookstore in Plœmeur (Morbihan). The operation is part of the Green Santa Claus campaign of the French Secours populaire. Its aim is to collect new children’s intended for underprivileged children in order to give them gifts for Christmas.

A personal gift under the tree

The principle is simple: people are invited to buy a new children’s book then place it in a collection box. These books will then be given to Secours populaire which will distribute them to families in difficulty as the end-of-year holidays approach. “The objective is to promote access to reading and allow each child to discover the pleasure of reading, while adding a personal gift under the tree,” explain Stella Jarnot and Martine Pierre, volunteers at Secours populaire.

The book, an opening to the world

“This solidarity action also helps support local bookstoresadds Emmanuelle Trocadéro of the PIC association. The book is more than a simple object: it opens doors to the world, imagination, discovery and travel. Children these days spend a lot of time on screens, it is important to give children a taste for reading. »

Olivia Defrene, bookseller in Sillage, adds: “Children’s books are also designed to suit every age, whether they are picture books for toddlers or captivating novels for young readers. » Last year, the operation made it possible to collect 183 books in the town. “The objective is clear, concludes Laurent Delcher, volunteer at PIC. We have until December 12 to exceed 200 pounds. »
