If the received idea that young people and children do not read is a reality, it is not enough to establish this observation. We still have to wonder about the causes of this situation. Many homes are without Books for various reasons. In some families, the parents do not speak French, others do not see the point of having books and in other homes, the priorities are first and foremost food and clothing.
Of course, you need housing, food, clothing, but having new books can change the lives of young people.
Until November 20, Secours populaire is organizing the Give to read operation to allow children and young people to have books really chosen for them. The principle of this operation sponsored by François Busnuel is simple: the customer chooses a children’s book in an independent partner bookstore for children and teenagers up to 14 years old, adds it to the list of their purchases, entrusts it to the bookseller before it is not recovered by Secours populaire. The association then takes care of distributing all these donations to the families it helps and supports, at Christmas or for a birthday.
22,000 books collected in France in 2023
More than just a book collection, this nationwide gesture is also a moment of sharing and discovery around reading.
Since its creation in 2018, Quelle à lire has become an unmissable event, the number of partner bookstores has increased from 10 to 750 this year and 22,000 books have been collected in France in 2023. The Villeneuvoise bookstore La Forme d’un livre, opened just two years ago, rue de la République, is participating in this charitable operation.
In addition, its manager, Camille Court, has committed to donating around ten books, from various publishing houses, notably L’Arche publisher and Gallimard Jeunesse, while Marie Saladin, Villeneuvoise author of a album for toddlers entitled My dog only thinks of cat, has already given away ten copies.
The operation lasts until November 20. More information on the Secours populaire website.
