A book of poetry belonging to a private establishment in England and borrowed by a student at school at the beginning of the 20th century has just been found in Wales, more than 100 years after its disappearance.

A copy of the book “The Poetry of Lord Byron” was returned to the private school of St Bees in England 113 years after being borrowed by a student, reports this Saturday October 19 BBC.

This private establishment has been welcoming students to this small English village for 430 years. This structure constitutes what we call a “boarding school” across the Channel: a boarding school with a good reputation for its level and the living environment offered to the students. Schooling at St Bees is paid, with prices ranging from 19,000 to 48,000 euros for one year.

A mysterious disappearance

Leonard Ewbank, who went to school at St Bees from the age of 9 until he was 18, borrowed a book in 1911 which he was due to return on September 25, 1911. The man behind this discovery, whose identity is anonymous, wanted the book to return to the library. Headteacher Andrew Keep stressed that the school was “honored” to retrieve the book. “It’s incredible to think that a piece of St Bees history has come back to us after all these years”he added.

Leonard Ewbank continued his studies at Queen’s College, Oxford, London. He was then called up to the flag during the Great War in 1915. He died on February 23, 1916 in Ypres (Belgium), on a battlefield, victim of a bullet in the head.
