COur bibliophile has been haunting auction rooms for 60 years. In Belgium. Mainly at Arenberg Auctions and Damien Voglaire in Brussels, at Van de Wiele in Bruges, at Lhomme in Liège also sometimes. And he doesn’t just consult their catalogs: he doesn’t buy without going to see what interests him at the exhibitions of the lots put up for sale. “I have to examine the book,” he said, “I have to inspect its condition, its binding, the pages. It also allows me to interact with the experts in these auction rooms.”

This bibliophile, let’s call him Louis, receives me in his office, flanked by a large cupboard, where his beautiful are displayed, like the stars of a photo shoot. Magnificent bindings that offer their spines. Books of literature, history, atlases. And also incunabula, these books from the cradle of printing, from 1450 to 1500.
