A book returns to a school library 113 years after being borrowed

Better late than never. In England, a book was returned to a school library more than 100 years after it was borrowed, reports the BBC. This is the work Poetry of Byrondelivered to St Bees Institution, near Whitehaven, Cumbria.

It was found in the collection of a couple living in Camarthenire, South Wales. The man who discovered it, who preferred to remain anonymous, wanted to ensure that the collection of poems was returned to its rightful owner. One inscription bore the name of the former student, Leonard Ewbank, the address of the school, and a date: September 25, 1911.

Killed in action during World War I

St Bees headteacher Andrew Keep said the school was “honoured” to have received the book, noting that Leonard Ewbank died in action during the First World War. “It’s amazing to think that a piece of St Bees’ history has come back to us after all these years,” he enthused, calling Leonard Ewbank’s story an “inspiration” for students.

Leonard Ewbank, born in 1893, attended this establishment between 1902 and 1911, before moving to Queen’s College, Oxford. St Bees School opened its doors 430 years ago. The veteran is presented on the roll of honor as “a courageous, honest and loyal Englishman”. According to research by St Bees, Loenard Ewbank had joined the 15th Border Regiment in 1915. He was shot in the head on 23 February 1916, and buried at the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground in Ypres, Belgium.
