Ahave you ever met a genius? A real one, one of those that humanity has this unfortunate tendency to produce only once per generation, if not per century. As I immersed myself in reading – and, a fortiori, the translation – of Peter Turchin, it was an impression that did not leave me from start to finish. That I was not there facing a clever person, nor even a learned commentator on the times, but one of those individuals who not only understand the times as a person, but are able to change them.

A characterization that Turchin would be the first to balk at. Providential men do not exist, he keeps repeating. And rightly so. Of course, we insist on (liking) believing the opposite, but it is only because of a brain that is struggling to grasp reality in its true form…
