Manitoban illustrator Chantal Piché breaks into the world of Quebec publishing

The perfect panties, published by Éditions Alaska, was released on September 16, 2024. This is the second Quebec children’s book illustrated by Chantal Piché. Connexion met her at her home in Winnipeg to talk about her creative process and her inspirations.

Chantal Piché has been drawing everywhere and all the time since she was a child. Sitting at the kitchen table in her family home, she draws a series of faces on her tablet while describing her style. The young illustrator, who specializes in children’s books, has always had a fascination for varied facial expressions.

A quote from Chantal Piché, illustrator

His beginnings

When she was 14, the aunt of a friend who worked for a publishing house noticed one of her drawings and gave her her first illustration contract.

It was in 2016 that Chantal Piché illustrated her first children’s book for Éditions des Plaines, in Manitoba, her native province. Written by Ginette Fournier, Monica-Claire and the Enchanted Park was the first in a series of three books featuring the same heroine.

This fall, three other publications are added to its list: Mom’s Werewolf (Minimo Éditions, published in May), The perfect panties, Alaska Editions and Emrys and his superpowers, which is self-published.

For Mom’s Werewolf, I only had the month of March to do it!

Other projects

The young illustrator is also working on a comic book project that is in the planning stage. Chantal Piché will also participate in the Salon du livre de l’Estrie on October 18 and 19, 2024.

The artist also does portraits for private clients, she participates in several drawing and life model workshops. You may come across her in a café in Quebec, where she goes regularly to work and meet other designers.
