Emirates has inaugurated its first flight to Antananarivo, Madagascar, marking a significant expansion of its global network.
The maiden flight, EK707, touched down at Ivato International Airport on September 3 and was celebrated with a traditional water cannon salute.
The arrival of the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was followed by an exclusive event attended by VIPs, government officials, industry guests, and media.
The inaugural flight was commanded by Captain Bruce Pope from Canada, with First Officer Solo Chuk, a Malagasy pilot who has been with Emirates for 14 years.
The flight, originating from Mahe in the Seychelles, operated with an almost full passenger load, showcasing the increased connectivity now available between Dubai and Antananarivo.
Emirates enhances connectivity
Andry Rajoelina, President of Madagascar expressed his enthusiasm about the new route, stating, “This inaugural flight between Dubai and Antananarivo is a historic milestone for Madagascar. It represents a significant boost for our tourism and economic development.
“Through Emirates, Madagascar opens itself to the world, and we look forward to leveraging this opportunity for national growth.”
Adnan Kazim, deputy president and CCO, Emirates, highlighted the strategic importance of the new route. He said: “Madagascar is a fascinating addition to our global network, offering access to its natural wonders, unique wildlife, and rich culture.
“With Madagascar’s goal to attract one million tourists by 2028, we are committed to supporting this vision by enhancing connectivity and providing premium travel options.”
Flight details to Antananarivo, Madagascar
The new service operates four times a week on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Flight EK707 departs Dubai at 8.55 am, arriving in Mahe, Seychelles, at 1.35 pm, and continues to Antananarivo, landing at 4.50 pm.
The return flight EK708 departs Antananarivo at 6.35 pm, arriving in Mahe at 10.20 pm, and then continues to Dubai, landing at 4.20 am the following day.
The schedule is designed to optimise connections to major destinations in Europe, the Far East, West Asia, and the Middle East/GCC region.
Emirates has continued to expand its global reach, offering direct or indirect flights to over 1,700 destinations, as the airline’s strategic partnerships have been instrumental in this growth.
The long-haul carrier initiated 16 new partnerships in 2023, including codeshares with Avianca and Batik Air Malaysia, as well as interline arrangements with Sri Lankan Airlines, Condor, flynas, Siberia Airlines, and Kenya Airways.
