European Cycling Championships Men’s U23: Time Trial

13:25 Heusden-Zolder – 14:30 Hasselt

Alec Segaert has won his third EC gold in a row in front of his home crowd in the time trial for the promises. In Hasselt he had a half minute lead on his nearest pursuer. Segaert pushed his compatriot Robin Orins just off the EC podium.

A subscription that just keeps going. Alec Segaert started his series of European time trial titles as a junior in 2021 and doesn’t seem to be planning to stop anytime soon. And certainly not in his own country.

Robin Orins paved the way with a first exceptionally sharp target time. Only three riders would go under that, and so it became an ungrateful fourth place for our compatriot.

Orins also celebrated when Segaert completed his dominant time trial in Hasselt, pushing him off the virtual podium. Half a minute faster than his two main competitors: Segaert was from another planet.

His average of 53.5 km/h spoke volumes: Segaert is a machine on the time trial bike. Jakob Söderqvist was allowed to join the podium as second, the Dutchman Wessel Mouris – who saw his younger brother win gold in the juniors – as third.

After his third European title in a row among the promises, Segaert seems completely ready to make the full step to the pros, also at the major international championships. And who knows what else will be possible there.

Absolute top time and the European title for Alec Segaert

GOLD for Alec Segaert!

The third European title in a row is a fact for Alec Segaert! In front of his own people in Belgium he finishes it ultra dominantly, half a minute faster than Söderqvist. A real machine on the time trial bike.

It will be bronze for Mouris, who comes in 3 seconds slower than Söderqvist. Segaert is still coming of course!

Jakob Söderqvist does however seriously undercut Orins’ time, in 35’37”. Normally Mouris and Segaert will also go faster and so a medal will be difficult for our second compatriot.

Fabian Weiss, one of the competitors for the medals with Orins, bites his teeth on the time of the Belgian. He finishes at 21 seconds, while they passed through in almost the same time 11 kilometers ago. Orins has gained a lot of weight!

Segaert has by far the best time at the 2nd intermediate point

Segaert continues to steam ahead

But Segaert remains unchallenged on his way to gold. More than half a minute faster than Mouris at the second intermediate point, only bad luck or a real collapse can keep him from the European title.

Wessel Mouris is fully committed to medal candidate, after his younger brother won gold in the juniors earlier. He clocks the fastest time after 20 kilometers at the second intermediate point.

Robin Orins smashes provisional best time

Robin Orins to the hotseat!

Yes indeed, Robin Orins has more than maintained his firm cadence. The Belgian is allowed to go to the hotseat with a time of 36’03”, almost a minute ahead of the rest of the pack. Although of course a lot of people still have to finish.

Söderqvist gets going and is 2 seconds faster than Orins at the second intermediate point. Earlier, the Swiss Weiss was also a fraction faster.

We are also slowly getting ready for the finish of that other Belgian, Robin Orins. He is on his way to a top time in Hasselt.

Segaert in the lead after 10 kilometers!

And with a nice lead already! Alec Segaert is just under 10 seconds faster than Wessel Mouris, who first had the lead after 10 kilometers.

Tough Orins at waypoint 2

From 4 seconds behind to 20 seconds ahead. Robin Orins is clearly ahead at the second intermediate point against Fabio Christen, who is still the leader at point 1. Söderqvist is not close yet, already 12 seconds behind.

Not long after Segaert’s start, the first rider to leave arrives at the finish. Czasa clocked a time of 38’21”.

Alec Segaert takes off!

Alec Segaert shoots off the starting podium!

There he goes! Alec Segaert has started his 31.3 kilometer journey from the cycling track in Heusden-Zolder to Hasselt.

Orins 4 seconds behind Christian

A provisional second time for Robin Orins at the first intermediate point, he has started well. Only 4 seconds separate him from Fabio Christen, still the leader after 10 kilometers.

One of Alec Segaert’s biggest competitors is getting ready for the final time. The Swede Jakob Söderqvist is a young time trialist through and through.

Fabio Christen, also a pro at Q36.5, is currently the fastest after 10 kilometers. Although of course more than 20 riders still have to get through.

Start Robin Orins

The first of two Belgians at the start: Robin Orins rolls off the starting podium. Next season he will become a pro at Lotto-Dstny, just like Alec Segaert, what can he do today?

The sun has come out again on this changeable autumn day. Hopefully it stays that way and all the men can race in the same weather conditions.

Robin Orins is already eager to start his time trial. He still has to be patient for about 10 minutes.

A Kosovar, a Turk, an Icelander and a Cypriot are the riders from exotic racing countries who will kick off this European Championship time trial for U23 riders after the German Czasa.

Segaert at 2:01 PM

German Moritz Czasa will be the first starter in the time trial for the promising riders at 1.25 pm.

Our compatriot Alec Segaert will be the last to step off the starting podium as defending champion, at 2.01 p.m.

In between, at 1:42 PM, it is also Robin Orins’ turn.
