“I feel like I’ve been had”, Pierre Sage failed to renegotiate his subscription to watch Ligue 1

As Olympique Lyonnais travels to Lens on Sunday for the fourth day of Ligue 1, Pierre Sage spoke about the visibility of the championship matches. While it has become the new major broadcaster, DAZN is struggling to see its subscriptions take off, due – in part – to prices deemed excessive.

“Am I worried about visibility? Absolutely. (…) What is worrying is perhaps the financial side, even if they made an offer 10 euros less,” said the Gones coach. “I think that today, Ligue 1 is a product that has increased in value over the past few seasons, there are spectacular matches, more and more teams that want to play an attacking game, crazy scenarios… I think we are a good customer for DAZN or its predecessors,” he continued.

Football fans must pay €29.99 per month – a rate that rises to €39.99 if they do not wish to commit to a year – to be able to watch eight of the nine league matches per weekend. In response to criticism, the British platform has launched a promotion from September 10 to 22, lowering the price of the annual subscription to €19.99 per month. Those who wish to take the monthly offer (without commitment) will benefit from the first two months at €19.99.

“I think there will be a solution”

But this gesture only concerns new subscribers and therefore does not make everyone happy, starting with… Pierre Sage. “I myself took the offer at 10 euros more and they do not want to give me the 10 euros less, so I feel a little… I have the impression of having been had (smile), but that’s how it is, that’s the game.”

While expressing his fears for the visibility of the championship, the French technician nevertheless wants to be optimistic. “I don’t think (that in the long term, we could see less Ligue 1). I think there will be a solution because football must keep a spectacular side so there are people who come to the stadium, others who watch on TV. (…) I don’t think people want there to be less football.”

On the pitch, the OL players will try to continue their momentum. Victorious against Strasbourg after two opening defeats, they travel to Lens on Sunday.
