As the census of the population of Villefranchois begins on Thursday, the League for Human Rights is calling on residents on the question of the origin of their parents.

A new population census campaign begins this Thursday morning, until February 22, in Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Nearly a third of the population will be surveyed. On the occasion of this new campaign, the Villefranche branch of the League for Human Rights is raising awareness about one point in the questionnaire.

“Since this year, however, a question has been added: the country of birth of our parents. This question is unnecessary, unacceptable and dangerous,” argues the association, with the support of Mrap (Movement against racism and for friendship between peoples), and the CGT, Solidaires and FSU unions.

“This question makes discrimination possible”

“No public policy justifies whether a foreign origin, or not, is collected in our individual bulletin,” comments Diane Gastellu, president LDH Villefranche-Decazeville. “This appears to be an additional tool in the event of discriminatory policy, particularly for example on the allocation of social housing. It makes no sense and it is harmful.”

“Currently, a town hall cannot have access to this information because it does not exist. This question presents a lot of dangers,” continues the president. “Indeed, it opens the way to different treatment of people depending on their geographical origin, and this at the level of municipalities, territories or more broadly. Our legal recourses did not make it possible to obtain the withdrawal of the question, but we have obtained that it is not obligatory. We of course call on the population to respond to the census, which is an important tool, but to ignore this point.

The Post Office responsible for the census

For this census, the municipality is renewing the partnership with La Poste, responsible for carrying out the census. “Agents benefit from an image of trust among citizens, while having good knowledge of the field,” comments the municipality.

This 2025 campaign will be led by Béatrice Gasc and Tiffany Luzège-Boyer. They can be replaced if necessary by Olivier Lis. They will come to the homes of the people listed with an official INSEE card including an identity photo and a town hall stamp. If you are registered this year (the accommodation selected is defined by INSEE), the agents will leave an official information notice in the mailbox with the procedure to follow. Responding via the Internet is the simplest way to be counted, by connecting with a code to carry out this process online, simple and secure, on the site le-recense-ment-et-moi.fr.

People who cannot do this on the internet will be contacted subsequently by the town hall. “The census, which is a civic duty for citizens, provides figures to know the needs of the population and build the future. The data is confidential and protected,” concludes the town hall.
