“New Year’s Eve nights are generally rather calm in the Channel”, indicated Colonel Thierry Dedieu, deputy director of Sdis (Departmental Fire and Rescue Service) of Manche, during the visit of Prefect Xavier Brunetière to the 18 call center in Saint-Lô (Manche), at the start evening Tuesday December 31, 2024.

The officer's comments were not denied with two road accidents to be deplored in the early morning in Baudre and La Hague, causing two injuries. As of 8 p.m., firefighters had carried out 66 interventions, “while we are at around a hundred on average every day”, said Thierry Dedieu. Around 400 firefighters were mobilized throughout the department for this evening.

35,403 interventions in 2024

The prefect met the security and emergency services mobilized on New Year's Eve by going to the Saint-Lô emergency center, the Memorial hospital, the departmental gendarmerie group and finally the police station.

During his first stop at the 18 call center, Colonel Thierry Dedieu presented the results of the year 2024 of Sdis. “We received 166,472 calls, carried out 35,403 interventions and supported 30,992 victims. » The big black spot remains the number of road deaths with 35 deaths (compared to 30 in 2023) out of the 2,224 accidents recorded in the Channel.
