The electoral for the of deputies and municipal councilors in Burundi will start on May 13 and end on June 2, 2025. This decision was formalized in a presidential decree signed on May 9, 2025, as reported by the site of our colleagues in Anadolu.

The article stipulates that “the electoral campaign for the elections of deputies and municipal councilors will be opened on May 13 and closed on June 2, 2025”. The decree specifies that only political parties, the coalitions of political parties, and the independent , whose applications were validated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), are authorized to campaign.

According to information relayed by Anadolu, the CENI has unveiled a list of potential for the double voting of June 5, 2025. This list includes 21 political parties, a coalition made up of four parties, and 10 independent candidates.

The legislative and municipal elections are scheduled for June 5, 2025. These polls will be followed by the senatorial elections scheduled for July 23, 2025, and the election of the collinary councilors and districts organized on August 25, 2025. The country is also preparing for a presidential election in 2027.

The current context of shortage in Burundi could disrupt the trips of political actors during the campaign, a point of concern underlined by observers.

The elections, held on May 20, 2020, saw an overwhelming for the CNDD-FDD party. At the time, 13 political parties, 2 coalitions, and 18 independent candidates were in the running.
